3 Doors Down Cafe & Lounge Information

Tucked into the heart of Southeast Portland at 1429 SE 37th Ave, 3 Doors Down Cafe & Lounge feels like one of those neighborhood spots you almost want to keep to yourself. The location blends seamlessly into the laid-back vibe of the area, surrounded by tree-lined streets and a steady hum of local life. It’s the kind of place you stumble into for brunch and end up staying longer than planned, just because everything-from the atmosphere to the menu-invites you to slow down.

Walking in, the first thing that stands out is the cozy, slightly eclectic interior. There’s a mix of rustic wood tones, soft lighting, and a lived-in charm that feels authentic rather than curated. During a recent visit, the dining room had a steady buzz, but it never tipped into being loud or overwhelming. It struck a balance that made it equally suited for a casual date or catching up with friends over coffee and cocktails.

The menu leans heavily into comfort food with a creative twist, and it’s clear there’s real thought behind the dishes. Breakfast and brunch are standout here, with options like savory scrambles, fluffy pancakes, and hearty sandwiches that feel both indulgent and well-balanced. One dish that left a lasting impression was a house-made hash paired with perfectly poached eggs-the kind where the yolk breaks just right. The ingredients tasted fresh, and the portions were generous without being excessive.

Service plays a big role in the overall experience, and the staff here seemed genuinely engaged. It wasn’t just about taking orders; there was a sense that they knew the menu well and cared about making recommendations that actually fit what you were in the mood for. During peak hours, things can slow down a bit, which isn’t unusual for a popular local diner, but the relaxed pace almost feels intentional rather than frustrating.

Looking through online reviews, there’s a consistent appreciation for the welcoming atmosphere and reliable quality. While it may not be a flashy destination restaurant, that’s not really the point. It’s more about consistency, comfort, and a menu that keeps regulars coming back. Prices are reasonable for Portland, especially considering the portion sizes and overall quality.

There might be flashier spots in the city, but places like this tend to leave a deeper impression because they focus on getting the fundamentals right-good food, a comfortable setting, and service that feels personal rather than transactional.

What People's Say About Place

This is always been one of our local favorites. They briefly closed and have recently reopened with new ownership. The menu is largely the same. Excellent Italian options overall. Some of our favorites are the bean spread with the bread for an appetizer as well as the kale Caesar salad. We also tried a scallop special. It was very good. The scallops were on the smaller side, but would be good for a 2 people to split. The vodka pasta is a long time favorite. The linguini sauce is Dijon based, but still good. The orecchiette is also a good option. The banana cream pie is a fantastic dessert. The restaurant is easy to miss just off of Hawthorne Boulevard. The service is very attentive and our food came out quickly. The prices are reasonable for the portions and quality you get.

I wanted to visit the Hawthorns scene ever since I was there 5 years ago so googled restaurants in this area .i saw this place and decided to give it a try . Honestly I did not expect such a vibrant street scene. What a fun area ! Walking to this restaurant was very enjoyable. Given the name of the restaurant I did not expect such an outstanding place . I was immediately greeted by the host and seated in this beautifully but subtly decorated restaurant. Upon bring seated and given a chance to take it all in the waitress came and greeted me and shared the history of the establishment. It was a nice touch . She was great and helping us choose drinks and dinner items. I started off with the butter lettuce salad . It was fresh, light and just right before the Rigatoni. I am not an expert on Italian food but I had never had something like this before . Incredible. I never knew Italian food could taste so good . What a gem this restaurant is ! Everything was perfect !

Good spot! Raddicio salad was one of the best salads I’ve ever had. Entrees were good and creative. Cocktail was decent.

Food was good, and waitstaff was accommodating. The mushroom toast was amazing. Definitely and older group of people there.

Just like I remember! The original owner and chef, so very awesome, prices that are reasonable, great menu, everything was so delicious and fresh, romantic atmosphere and awesome service. PERFECT! Had a beautiful bib salad, cavatelli and the famous banana cream pie for desert. Hope to go back soon!

If you didn't know... the owner / chef from pre-covid days IS BACK! We missed this great little place with the fresh in house made pasta and craft drinks. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Service was friendly and professional! Prices provide a range of tasty options. Thanks for a great meal and evening overall.

This is amazing little Italian restaurant! This is not the quite cozy atmosphere but a lively active place. Service was great. A couple of must tries are Mushroom Crouton which was amazing some in my family aren't keen on mushrooms but loved this dish and to top it off finish with the Banana Cream Pie. You won't be disappointed.

Fantastic food, ambiance and service. Great for a nice dinner out that doesn’t break the bank.
